TRAVEL

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, a vibrant and consistently surprising city. With each visit, you uncover something new. Our friend Sirikit has shared the best tips on must-visit places during her stay in this incredible city, accompanied by a local friend who showed her authentic spots.

From street art in Santa Teresa to iconic landmarks like Christ the Redeemer, Rio has that captivating touch. With a mix of languages and a culinary scene ranging from traditional Brazilian dishes to international flavors, the city’s culture is truly unique. Dining in Rio is an experience, whether it’s a Brazilian breakfast, street food, or the perfect caipirinha. As night falls, a relaxed stroll along Copacabana Beach, with the sea breeze and the rhythms of bossa nova, is the perfect formula for unwinding. So, you know, Rio awaits with all its vibes!

Barrio de Ipanema: An iconic neighbourhood where we stayed for a week. The emblematic beach seen in Brazilian postcards did not disappoint. Rent a sunbed and parasol, then enjoy some milho verde from one of the beach vendors.
Prainha: A small beach nestled between mountains and tropical forest.
O calçadão de CopacabanaTo collect Brazilian souvenirs and charms, take a walk along Copacabana Promenade in the early evening, sipping a cocktail from one of the beachside kiosks.
Jardim Botânico do Rio de JaneiroThe city is already fused with tropical nature, but the Botanical Garden is truly worth a visit.
Livraria da Travessa: Of course, as in every trip, I have to stop at a bookstore. I fell in love with Livraria da Travessa, not only for its atmosphere but especially for its selection of feminist books highlighting Brazilian women and the country’s culture. Also, Brazilian edition book covers are usually very beautiful and colourful.
Nema Padaria: Every morning, we went to Nema Padaria to buy our paes de queijo and then enjoy a mate in the small local café next door.
Natural&Sabor: For a typical breakfast enjoyed by all cariocas.
Vero GelatoRun by an Italian family, I tasted a delicious tonka bean ice cream on their terrace.
Mac Niteroi: I recommend going at the end of the day to enjoy the sunset over Rio’s bay. The museum’s futuristic architecture is incredible and offers a sublime view of the city’s most famous landmarks.
Bibi Sucos 1993: The go-to place for Açaí, Bibi Sucos made me addicted to the version mixed with banana.
Restaurante Tia Penha: Located high in the tropical forest, this Brazilian restaurant is the meeting place for generous family meals accompanied by live music.
Tropicalia Discos: The go-to vinyl store in Rio, where you can get lost for hours.
Tucum: This shop highlights indigenous craftsmanship. It’s an opportunity to discover wonders to bring home and learn a lot about the country’s history and native cultures.
A Roda de Samba de Pedra do Sal: Every Monday night, head to the Pedra do Sol neighbourhood in the old city to enjoy an authentic Roda de Samba. It’s the perfect occasion to taste a true caipirinha to the rhythm of Brazilian samba and dance all night. Don’t miss it!
